Parents Tell Their Stories: Guatemala

We chose to adopt from Guatemala for very practical reasons as we fit their criteria and it was the closest country to home for travel. From a personal standpoint, we soul-searched before adoption and recognized that we both have dark hair and skin features so we felt a child from this country would not "stick out" in our family (versus a Chinese little girl which we were also strongly considering). This was not a "deal breaker," but we felt more comfortable with this country choice and moved forward with our application.

Our actual story involved travel to Houston and then a three hour journey to Guatemala. We were met by our adoption agency and had good vibes right away. Unfortunately, the language barrier made it difficult to totally grasp the dialogue around us. This was frustrating at times as we were so excited to meet our daughter. When we finally did meet our daughter, no words were needed. We were so excited to have our daughter in our arms and our emotions needed no translation.

In summary, the adoption of our daughter is the best decision we have made. That said, the international adoption process was very overwhelming at times (both at home with stress before receiving our daughter and again in country when picking her up). That stress was well worth it though as we look into our daughter's eyes. She is truly "our" daughter even though not by birth. We feel so much connection to her and love for her. We can't imagine a birth bond being any stronger. We just updated our paperwork and hope to go back and adopt a second child from Guatemala soon.

The goal of International Adoption Resources (IAR) is to provide orphans in our global community with a brighter future by connecting them to prospective adoptive parent(s) empowered with informational and financial resources. IAR is not an adoption agency, but we work closely with US based international adoption agencies. IAR supports adoptive parents interested in providing homes to international orphaned children.
